Are You Building the Business You Actually Want?
Daily tasks fill your time, but not always with purpose. Step back, clarify your direction, and align your marketing with your vision.

Does Your Daily Routine Sound Familiar?
- Responding to owner inquiries
- Answering booking questions
- Adjusting pricing
- Coordinating property repairs
- Responding to reviews
All necessary? Yes.
But when was the last time you stepped back and asked yourself whether you’re building the business you actually want to have in five or ten years?
Creating Space to Think
I learned this the hard way: when you’re immersed in the details, it’s almost impossible to see the direction you’re heading.
To overcome this, I deliberately step away and follow a simple process.
Our office is near one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks: the three bridges over the Firth of Forth. When I need to clear my head, I cross one of them. The wind cuts through you, the river stretches below, and suddenly the urgent email or complicated problem seems smaller.
That view imposes perspective. It reminds me that what I build today determines what I’ll have in five years, and I’d better make sure I’m heading in the right direction.
Knowing Where You’re Heading
If you want to manage 50 premium properties in three coastal destinations, your processes and marketing need to reflect that right now.
Your website should speak to the owners you want to attract, not just the ones you already have. Your email campaigns should showcase your expertise in those specific locations and property types. Your SEO should target the right search terms for premium guests and quality owners.
If instead you market to anyone with a property and to any guest with any budget, you’ll grow — but perhaps not in the direction you planned. Or maybe that’s exactly where you want to go.
But it has to be a conscious decision: embrace marketing that fits your future.
Too many operators build their marketing around what’s easiest today, rather than what moves them toward their goal.
A website launched in a hurry because you needed it now, without a plan to later build one that supports your future direction. Email campaigns sent only when you remember. Social media posts that don’t connect with your brand or the guests you’re trying to attract.
In five years, do you want to be known for budget stays or boutique stays? For large portfolios or artisanal curation? That answer should shape every piece of content you create, every owner you target, and every channel you invest time in.
A Quarterly Question
Strategy isn’t a one-time process. Step away from the task list once a quarter and ask yourself: “If we keep marketing this way, where will we be in five years?”
If the answer doesn’t match where you want to be, change something now.
The big picture doesn’t take care of itself. You have to look at it deliberately, and often enough that your daily work actually supports it.
