Two Labour councillors will face a group vote on 1 September 2026 to determine who replaces Bev Craig as Manchester City Council leader. Garry Bridges, the council’s deputy leader who has been running day-to-day operations since Craig departed, and Tom Robinson, the executive member for healthy Manchester and adult social care, are the two confirmed candidates. The winner, formally appointed at a full council meeting on 3 September, will control a £1bn budget and set the enforcement and planning direction for every short-term-let operator in the city (BBC News, 6 August 2026).
