NI Tourist Accommodation Standards Review Underway
Belfast enforcement is ramping up while the DfE rethinks decades-old certification rules. Here's what NI operators should watch.
Northern Ireland’s Department for the Economy (DfE) ran a consultation between October 2025 and January 2026 on updating the statutory regulation of tourist accommodation. The current standards date from 1992, last revised in 2011. The results have not yet been published as of August 2026. For STR operators in Northern Ireland, the consultation signals that change is coming. Belfast City Council is not waiting. Enforcement notices against unlicensed operators surged to 11 in the first half of 2026, up from just 2 in all of 2024.
