Portugal Extends Council AL Deadline to Dec 2026
Portugal's new decree-law extends the deadline for municipal STR regulation to 31 December and gives councils a one-off power to freeze new licences.
Portuguese municipalities with more than 1,000 local accommodation (AL) registrations now have until 31 December 2026 to adopt or amend their municipal AL regulations, under Decreto-Lei n.º 151/2026 published in the Diário da República on 29 July 2026. The same decree grants councils a one-time power to extend existing suspensions of new AL registrations, or re-impose fresh ones, in containment zones where housing pressure is highest. Both measures took effect immediately and expire automatically on 31 December 2026.
